| Maggie Valley is located in the mountains of North Carolina, next to the most picturesque section of the Blue Ridge Parkway, about 35 miles west of Asheville. Situated in a narrow valley along route 19, it is home to the Wheels Through Time Museum and is a "biker friendly" community. Deal's Gap (aka The Dragon's Tail), Cherohala Skyway, Great Smoky Mountain Park, Foothills Parkway, and several waterfalls, are all day rides from Maggie Valley (i.e., 200 - 250 mile round trip). Weather records show an average low and high of 63 F and 83 F for July 27 - 28 in Maggie Valley. Temperatures along the Blue Ridge Parkway, however, are usually 10 degrees lower. So bring your warm weather riding gear, your cool weather riding gear, and - don't forget your rain gear. Host Motel The Stony Creek Motel is our host motel. A small "mom and pop" owned and operated motel, it has 17 rooms (11 with two double beds and 6 with one king bed). Room rates are $ 78/night or $ 89/night (including tax) depending on whether you reserve a room with a balcony overlooking the creek. They are holding all rooms under the name "GlideFest" until the end of June. To reserve your room, call the Stony Creek Motel at (828) 926-1996. Remember to tell them you're with GlideFest. If Stony Creek is full, try the Jonathan Creek Inn [(828) 926-1232]. It is located right next to Stony Creek; although it is a bit more expensive. Motel rooms in Maggie Valley fill up fast for the summer weekends. So make your reservation as soon as possible. Early Arrivals GlideFest begins with our traditional "meet and greet" Friday evening (see below). A number of us, however, are planning to arrive on Wednesday to take advantage of the great riding in the area. Feel free to join us. If you do plan to arrive early, a Garmin GPS file is available containing eleven day rides in the area. If you would like a copy for your GPS, whether for your own day ride or to view as you tag along with us on a day ride, post a message on Harley Electra Glide Garage. Friday We'll kick off GlideFest with our traditional "meet and greet" at Stony Creek around 6:30 pm. We'll order-in pizza or eat at the restaurant next door and, as always, it's BYOB. Saturday Group Ride Saturday morning we'll assemble around 9:30 am in the Stony Creek parking lot and leave around 10:00 am for a group ride along the Blue Ridge Parkway. [Note: We may adjust these times somewhat at GlideFest.] We'll ride along the highest and the most picturesque section of the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is ranked as one of America's most scenic roads. No commercial traffic is permitted on the Parkway and it is suitable for riders of all skill levels. The speed limit is 45 mph and park ranger's patrol to enforce the limit. Our ride will be between 120 and 150 miles in length. Along the way, we'll stop for lunch and at a few turnouts for pictures (including the highest point along the Parkway). We'll probably get back to Maggie Valley around 4 pm - maybe a little earlier, maybe a little later. We have dinner reservations at 6:00 pm at Hurley's Creekside restaurant, located next door to Stony Creek. After dinner, volunteers will be asked to finish any beer we have left and another GlideFest East will conclude. Sunday morning, we'll say our goodbyes and wish everyone a safe ride home. Another GlideFest will be in the books as we eagerly anticipate GlideFest 2013. See You All there ! |
